Sony has launched the development kit for its own Google Glass rival SmartEyeglass.
The company revealed the concept earlier this month in Berlin.
The SmartEyeglass will feature a binocular see-trough eyewear display, accelerometer, brightness sensors, 3 megapixel embedded camera, electronic compass, and ambient light sensor.
Sony said in its blog post: "We’ve leveraged unique hologram optics technology to develop a lens that achieves high transparency of 85% and thickness of just 3.0 mm, without the use of half or monocular mirrors that obstruct vision.
"In addition, the monochrome display ensures that while energy consumption is lower than a color display, high luminance (up to 1,000 cd/m2) is achieved, to deliver a screen with clear readability that allows a user to easily read text in a wide range of environments."
The eyewear connects to the user’s android device wirelessly and uses apps to collect data.
It provides wearers with notifications and other useful information.
Sony SmartEyeglass project head Hiroshi Mukawa said: "This is about going beyond hardware.
"Our thinking is to match external creativity with in-house innovation to truly stretch the capability of the products we create – releasing the SDK early means that both our industry’s most established and up-and-coming developers will help shape what SmartEyeglass is capable of."
