Last month Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG unveiled its largest computer project in Kazakhstan to date. Over the next 18 months, in partnership with the Computing Center of the Ministry of Finance of Kazakhstan, it is to roll out a $6.1m system to automate offices of the Republican Tax Inspectorate. On August 1 the two partners presented the first working version at the Tax Inspectorate Office of Moskovskii District of Almaty. By the end of 1996 the system should have been installed in six District offices in Almaty and one in the city’s tax office. By the end of 1997 the system should be in 129 offices in eight regions of Kazakhstan. This will cover around 40% of all Tax Inspectorate offices in the country. Reinhard Voigtlander, president of Siemens Nixdorf Osteuropa GmbH, says he considers this the largest computer project ever undertaken in Kazakhstan and the most promising for Siemens. Responsible for delivering technology to automate 40% of the Tax Inspectorate Offices in the republic, it will be well placed to finish the job. The hardware for each server node will be a Siemens PrimerGY Dual Pentium 133MHz machine running Santa Cruz Unix that can be connected to between 15 and 48 workstations. The Informix relational database will be three-tier, district, regional and national, running the proprietary AIS NALOG application developed by the Computing Center, Kazakhstan. The system is now ready at district level, regional functionality still being developed.
