Ever keen to propagate 3D graphics technology and hopefully increase its market, Silicon Graphics Inc has released GLX source code into the open source community. The company says it wants to stimulate development of OpenGL API hardware acceleration on Linux and other Unix operating systems. GLX is the software layer that integrates OpenGL with the X Window System, widely used as a graphical user interface for Unix. GLX lets OpenGL render 3D graphics into an X Window. It also works over networks to display OpenGL content to remote computers. SGI promises to work with Red Hat Inc and Precision Insight Inc to enhance the GLX source code for Xfree86, a freely-distributable version of the X Window System. á
