Seagate Technology Inc has put its Livingstone, Scotland semiconductor factory up for sale because it is not a core area for the company. The Scotts Valley, California-based hardware and software vendor for storing, accessing, and managing information says that its recent $45m investment in March to move production from 4 inch to 6 inch silicon substrates will prove an advantage in selling the plant. The company, however, would not say where Seagate would purchase the semiconductors in future, but as the chips are transported to the Far East it is more than likely to be a producer in that region. The decision to sell the semiconductor manufacturing factory was made recently, he said, and not part of the review of the company started in 1997.
