Samsung takes on Goggle Glass with wearable patent

News: Patent shows device that lets user project keypad, calls and texts using VR.

By Joao Lima

Samsung has filed a patent application for an IoT glass type wearable that could rival Google’s smart glasses.

The patent application shows Samsung’s ambition to design a wearable that allows users to not only experience what Google Glasses do, but also to interact with, for example, 3D images in mid-air, dial phone numbers, send SMSs, and play virtual piano keyboards.

The patent application was made in September and has also revealed that Samsung’s potential gadget will connect to smartphones.

The smart glasses feature two cameras to project 3D images in mid-air. The patent also shows virtual reality capabilities that will allow users to project a keypad on their hand (held 10cm away from the device) in order to make calls or send text messages.

Samsung said: "Methods and apparatuses consistent with exemplary embodiments include a method and wearable device for setting an input region in the air or on an actual object based on a user motion, and providing a virtual input interface in the set input region.

"A user of the glass type wearable device can easily input to control the wearable device by using a virtual input interface in the set input region in the air or on an actual object."
