Roku topped the list of Internet video streaming device vendors in the US, with 29% sales, surpassing Chromecast’s sales figure of 20% and Apple TV’s 17% of overall sales.

All three firms held the largest share of the video streaming market, while Amazon’s Fire TV box and stick was fourth with 10% share.

Parks Associates’ survey of US homes with a broadband Internet connection noted that 10% of them either bought a streaming media player or stick during the year.

Parks Associates research director Barbara Kraus said: "Nearly 50 percent of video content that U.S. consumers watch on a TV set is non-linear, up from 38 percent in 2010, and it is already the majority for people 18-44."

Roku’s thumb-sized streaming video dongle was launched in 2012 for $99, while its latest version was rolled out in early 2014 for $49, after Chromecast reported healthy sales figures.

"More than 25% of U.S. broadband households will have a streaming media player by 2015, and by 2017, there will be nearly 50 million streaming media players sold globally."

"Their low cost will make streaming media devices popular gifts this holiday season, and the race to meet consumer demands for online video will make this product category a very hot topic at the 2015 International CES."
