Rapsberry Pi has revealed the new Compute Module 3 (CM3), promising twice the RAM and roughly 10x the CPU performance of the original Module.
CM1, which was launched in 2014, is said to have received “a lot of uptake from various markets, particularly in IoT and home and factory automation”. Raspberry Pi predicts an adventurous future for the new Computer Module line, claiming that it is “destined for space!”
The ‘standard’ version of the CM3 will offer a processor performing at 1.2GHz with 1GB RAM, matching the Pi3. The “Compute Module 3 Lite” is equipped with the same processor and power as the ‘standard’version, but allows the user more options for customisation and experimentation with SD card compatibility.
The latest offering is aimed at being able to equip the “guys in the garage” with “access to the same technology as the big guys”. In light of this latest announcement, which was made via the Raspberry Pi blog, the company has clarified that they will not be “obsoleting the original Compute Module”, as it retains its validity in terms of lower-cost and spec, as CM3 could be ‘overkill’.
The CM3 and the CM3L will cost $30 and $25 respectively, with the original module reduced to $25. Alongside the CM3 announcement, Raspberry Pi is releasing a ‘get-you-started breakout board’, granting the user a ‘starting template’ for design purposes, or for experimenting with the hardware.
