Somerset, New Jersey-based Raritan makes KVM switches and console servers, which perform the same remote access and management functions as KVM but for Unix servers and network elements. It is privately held, making it difficult to get an exact idea of its market share and/or revenue, but it is generally considered to be no. 2 in the enterprise KVM/serial console market behind Avocent.
The technology in its flagship Dominion KX switch line is the same now delivered in the small form-factor KX101 device, with the difference that the switches use a limited number of channels to access multiple servers in a rack, a situation which can lead to contention for access by different admins.
The KX101, on the other hand, has a single port and is designed thus to link to just one server, making its connection unblockable. It also has a Power-over-Ethernet capability so that it can be used without the need for additional power supply and cabling.
Raritan said the KX101 has a suggested retail price of $859 per unit in the US and is also available inn bundles of 12 units, at which point volume discounts apply.
