IT leaders worry as much about change as they do about crises

News: Infrastructure change can impact a CIO's career just as much as a major data outage.

By Joao Lima

Senior IT leaders define their career success not based on day-to-day activity but from pivotal moments in their career.

And among the pivotal moments viewed as being career changing they name data outages and tech crises as slightly less important than infrastructure changes.

A survey of IT leaders in the UK, Germany and France focused on distinct ‘moments that matter’ that are key to the career trajectory for IT decision makers.

77% said they believe their career success is defined by key moments that generate recognition and deliver success for the wider organisation.

Network, voice, and data centre service provider Colt said for those IT leaders that perceive themselves as ‘exceeding expectations’ in their role 91% of the 301 interviewees see a stronger link between ‘moments that matter’ and personal success .

77% of participants also said the ability to excel during critical points in their business calendar is more important than ongoing support from service providers.

At the top of the ‘moments that matter’, 67% said new infrastructure changes are the events that leave the biggest impact.

This is followed by external events (data outage/ tech crisis) with 63%, and responding to emerging customer requirements (60%).

Carl Grivner, EVP at Colt, said: "Personal success will ultimately be determined by the ability to identify and drive those moments that help business transform and better serve customers."
