Oxford-based Research Machines Plc has won a UKP4m order to supply every secondary school in Northern Ireland with a personal computer network and software for its Computerised Local Administration System for Schools: the company was chosen from a shortlist that included ICL, DEC, Siemens and Apricot, and the Administration System will provide over 240 networks with 1,750 personal computers; Research Machines is responsible for the supply of all hardware, software, installation and training over the next four years, and it will work with Microsoft and SIMS Ltd to implement the software applications; a typical configuration will comprise an 80386-based file server from Research Machines, along with Novell NetWare, Ethernet, between five and 10 Nimbus Series workstations and a laser printer; each network will run a number of applications integrated under Windows 3, Word, Excel, and SIMS Local Management Software.
