Oki Electric Industry Co is to contract development of software for its PABXes to an arm of the J R Tata Sons & Co Pvt Ltd conglomerate of Bombay, India, according to the Nikkei Industry Daily. Tata Telecom, which already makes IOX 100 series PABX hardware under contract to Oki, will start the work from next year. Oki PABXes are sold mainly for export to South-East Asian countries, and development an manufacture in Japan makes them increasingly expensive. PABXes for the Japanese market will continue to be made in Japan. No development personnel are expected to be put out of work in Japan, since engineers for that kind of development work have always been in short supply in Japan, according to Oki.
