The Oak Ridge National Laboratory, operated for the US Department of Energy by Martin Marietta Energy Systems Inc in Oak Ridge, Tennessee is to buy a 150 GFLOPS peak Intel Corp Paragon XP/S parallel supercomputer as part of a three-year Co-operative Research and Development Agreement under which the two will collaborate in support of the Department of Energy’s Technology Commercialisation Initiative; the lab will serve as a beta test site for both hardware and software on Intel’s Paragon and iPSC/860 supercomputers and the new machine will be used for modelling of pollution movement in groundwater and the design of new materials and alloys.
