Novell Inc has released its LAN WorkPlace product for Macintosh local area networking software giving users of Apple Computer Inc’s flagship Macintosh personal computers access to host computers, peripherals and services on businesswide TCP/IP networks. The LAN WorkPlace line, which also includes versions for MS-DOS, Santa Cruz Unix, Xenix and OS/2 operating systems, provides TCP/IP protocol software, Telnet terminal emulation, FTP file transfer and network monitoring software to connect desktop clients with dissimilar host computer systems and workgroups. Native desktop interfaces are preserved. LAN WorkPlace for Macintosh supports Macintosh user interface standards to access a range of TCP/IP network services, exchanging information with systems such as VAX minicomputers and Unix-based workstations, while supporting multiple sessions with other workgroup computers and NetWare servers. New features of the LAN Workplace for Macintosh Release 1.1 include support for VT100 European character sets, an expanded screen display to take advantage of the larger Macintosh screens and an extended print-screen function – users can print portions of Telnet sessions with point-and-click mouse functions. It requires a hardware connection between the Macintosh and an Ethernet network. The price is $250.
