NetScape Communications Corp has announced new messaging software and Web server software that includes encryption and authentication capabilities. Mail Server 2.0 is integrated with the company’s Navigator client software to enable users to read and post electronic mail or administer the mail server remotely on the network, and supports the IMAP4 Internet Mail Access Protocol. The package can be bought individually or as part of Suite-Spot, and features common server management and centralized administration, with SuiteSpot servers simplifying management. The Java and JavaScript programming languages are also supported. Through support for the Se-cure Sockets layer 3.0 protocol, Mail Server enables encrypted remote server administration. Other security features include a dynamic single session key that encrypts client passwords and client-server communications, multiple levels of password protection, and administrator control over which domains and hosts can send and receive electronic mail. It is due this quarter and pricing will start at $1,000. The company’s new Web server software, Certificate Server, is designed to enable users to authenticate communications over the Internet, enabling the use of public-key certificates. It uses the X.509v3 standard for certificate content encoding and the SSL 3.0 protocol to enable encrypted communications, message integrity and authentication. According to NetScape, it can be run in heterogeneous computing environments, using existing hardware and operating systems to issue certificates to compatible applications. In addition, administrators can use Navigator together with HyperText Mark-up Language forms and JavaScript scripts to manage Certificate Server from remote computers on the network. Certificate Server is due to ship for major Unix systems and Windows NT next quarter for $1,000.
