Motorola Inc has teamed up with Tandem Computers Inc and Logica North America to do an X400 gateway for its Embarc wireless messaging system. The service – it stands for Electronic Mail Broadcast To A Roaming Computer, relies on the Motorola pagers and portable personal computers such as the Hewlett-Packard Co HP 95LX hand-held. The new Embarc switch will enable portable users to receive and send electronic data to users of other public and private X400 electronic mail systems. Tandem is supplying the hardware – a NonStop Cyclone/R RISC machine under the Guardian operating system and is also supplying some software in its implementation of the 1988 X400 electronic mail standard. Logica is handling the custom software required to shuttle messages between the two network types. Logica also created the MS-DOS software that enables portable computers, including the HP 95LX, to receive and store Embarc messages downloaded by the Motorola NewsStream pager.
