MIPS Computer Systems Inc, officially charged with recruiting adherents to the Advanced Computing Environment Initiative, says it has signed up another 10 companies. The revelation came at an ACE symposium held at venture capital firm of Hambrecht & Quist earlier this month. MIPS declined any further details, such as their names, until some months down the road, when it fully expects to have even greater participation. Jim Billmaier, the MIPS official directly responsible, would add only that the response from the personal computer world had been heavy and the new recruits signed with little pressure from MIPS. Meanwhile the technical committee that is overseeing the ACE hardware specification, where MIPS also presides, was due to hold its final review last week before freezing the specification in June. Non-ACE members will be denied access to the specification until they see the first products come to market in 1992.
