Intel Corp was never pressured to drop support for Sun Microsystems’ Java APIs, or to stop developing its own drivers, Microsoft Corp’s Eric Engstrom said in court yesterday. The government’s Philip Mallone showed a 1995 internal Intel email that said that Microsoft had wanted Intel to support DirectX multimedia application programming interfaces instead of Sun’s Java equivalent. Engstrom said that Microsoft had wanted to be a great partner for Intel and that meant leaving no bandwidth for other partners. He claimed that Microsoft had wanted Intel to drop its Native Signal Processing project – which involved moving the audio functions of a DSP chip onto the CPU – simply because it was not very effective. He took a swipe at Intel, claiming the project did not enhance the end user experience, it was designed to eliminate hardware.
