Microsoft leads enterprise app vendors as Dell settles for last place

Kable Global ICT Intelligence: Microsoft seen as a market leader for enterprise applications but businesses rank Cisco as the vendor that most satisfied their needs.

By Joao Lima

A report from Kable shows that businesses consider Microsoft to be the leader in the enterprise applications vendor market, followed by IBM, Cisco, Apple and Dell.

44.5% of those surveyed picked Microsoft as the vendor which they believe is the ‘leader’ in the field of enterprise applications.

Respondents had the opportunity to choose two providers, with the category "others", which includes companies like Salesforce, Sage, Siemens or Infor, being chosen by 49.5% of respondents.

IBM is seen as a leader by 31.8%, followed by Cisco and Apple (10%). Dell scored the lowest among the top five enterprise application providers with 4.5%.

Based on technology that organisations have invested or plan to invest in the next two years, Microsoft was also first in business intelligence (38.7%), security products (22.4%), content management (35.7%), mobility (27.9%), IT systems management (37.3%), communications and collaboration (29.2%), cloud computing (31.7%) and network services (31.1%).

The company shares the first place in the rank for green IT and security services with IBM. Both were said to be leaders in these two fields by 27.6% and 20.2% of those surveyed respectively.

Comparatively, respondents ranked Microsoft second when rating their satisfaction towards the provider regarding the vendor’s enterprise application solutions. Microsoft received a score of 3.3 out of 4, and was named as the primary provider of 20.7% of respondents. Cisco, which is the primary provider for 6.3% of the respondents, scored a satisfaction rating of 3.9.

Interestingly, SAP, who was not viewed as a top five leader in the enterprise applications market, was ranked 3.2 points for customer satisfaction, the same as IBM.

Nearly half of the respondents (49.5%) said they use "another" provider, which they gave 3 points in the satisfaction rank.

Oracle also comes in with a satisfaction rating score of three points, and is used by 4.5% of those surveyed.

As ICT budgets, applications spending is the fifth biggest area of investment, representing 13.2% of the budget this year. Firms set spending on data centres, networks, service desk and end-user computing as their top five areas of expenditure.

Expect the applications market to grow, with enterprises expected to increase their ICT budget specifically on applications next year to 13.9%.

All figures come from Kable’s ICT Customer Insight survey, which polled 2685 respondents, from across the world in Q4 2014. The survey findings include data on satisfaction towards enterprise application vendors, which vendors are considered to be leaders in the field of enterprise applications and applications budget allocation.
