Memory Technology Ltd, Wokingham, Berkshire supplier of data back-up and storage products has released a SCSI Over Fibre Transceiver, SOFT. SOFT enables data to be mirrored or backed up from a remote site up to 2.5 miles away at a 10Mb per second transfer rate with a 3% reduction in performance compared with a standard 19.5 foot SCSI connection, the company says. SOFT units connect to an SCSI port on the host computer that is then connected to another remote SOFT unit via fibre optic cabling. The second SOFT unit then connects via a fast 8-bit SCSI cable to peripheral storage devices at the remote site. The hardware was developed by UK-based company Aeon Communications Ltd. Each SOFT unit has a 25 MIPS processor with a Nexus Pipleline Architecture, enabling multiple concurrent data paths to be used maximise data throughput. SOFT units are out now at ú18,960 for two units.
