Lure of overseas jobs could leave UK facing IT talent exodus

72% of professionals said they would consider an international move.

A new survey has revealed that the vast majority of UK tech professionals would consider moving overseas if they get the right opportunity.

Of the 553 UK-based technology professionals surveyed, 72% of respondents said they would consider an international move, or to a different region of the UK, with many already actively planning to do so.

About 23% of respondents indicated that they are actively looking to make an international move, while 24% said they are searching for new positions within the UK.

The US, Australia and Canada were named the top destinations for new career opportunities for UK professionals. France, Germany, New Zealand, Spain, the UAE, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Saudi Arabia are also some of the other lucrative options.

Lifestyle-associated factors, or a better work/life balance, is the primary reason for 41% of respondents who plan to move abroad.

According to the Dice survey, the main reason for considering a domestic relocation appear to differ by region.

Increased earnings serves as the central motivator for those considering a move in London, while lifestyle-related factors are the primary reason for those offered opportunities in the South West.

People who consider a move to Scotland cited quality-of-life, career advancement and family considerations as the main factors.

Dice marketing director in the UK and Continental Europe Jamie Bowler said: "Tech professionals fully recognise the highly transferable nature of their skills. As a result, tech professionals are often more open than other professionals to the concept of moving – whether to improve their career or their lifestyle.

"This dynamic, in turn, places greater pressure on employers to ensure they have the right culture and working environment in which tech professionals will thrive. Those businesses that have an international footprint should also actively facilitate mobility within the organization in order to both attract and retain strong tech talent."
