Lucent Technologies Inc has announced another three supporters for its Inferno network operating system. They include Cirrus Logic Inc, Lucent’s partner in the recently restructured Cirent Semiconductor Corp joint venture (CI No 3,235). Inferno will be ported to run on the Cirrus CL-PS7110 and CL-PS7500FE chip sets, the first designed for very low power pages, personal digital assistants, smart phones and hand-held internet browsers. The second is aimed at higher-end internet appliances such as network computers, internet-enabled televisions, screen phones and digital video disk players. Fremont, California-based Cirrus also plans to have add Inferno support to its hardware reference platforms for internet access devices. The other two Inferno partners are Orga Card Systems Inc, a developer of microprocessor-based Smart Cards, and Global Converging Technologies Inc, a wireless residential gateway manufacturer. Paoli, Pennsylvania-based Orga, a subsidiary of Orga Kartensysteme GmbH of Germany, will use Inferno to give its Smart Cards access to private and public networks, and will use Inferno’s Styx communications protocol. Global Converging Technologies, a Bedford, Texas-based company, which wants Inferno to co-ordinate communications links between its residential gateway and thin-client devices designed for homes and small offices. Its Inferno-enabled gateway is expected to appear on the market in the fourth quarter of 1998.
