Linuxcare Inc has agreed to provide enterprise-class support to customers of Terra Soft Solutions’ Yellow Dog Linux for Apple Macintosh PowerPCs and G3s. Yellow Dog Linux is a particularly important new Linux distribution because of the way it enables high-performance server applications across the range of Apple hardware platforms, noted Art Tyde, Linuxcare CEO. Since the Loveland, Colorado-based Terra Soft launched its Linux distribution last year, however, Apple Computer Inc has released its own Mac OS X Server under a modified open source license. Whether Yellow Dog can compete with Apple’s own Unix-like server platform on the same hardware, with or without Linuxcare’s support, remains to be seen.
