Apple’s iPhone 6 could become an. all-in-one security clearance and payment card across work places and universities
Robert Huber, who developed the ‘All-Campus Card’ concept in 1985, said that the phone, which features mobile payment and biometric security features, could be used instead of institution-issued ID cards.
Currently, many workplaces and educational institutions around the world use a plastic credit-card style card which serves the purpose of providing entry to buildings and identification.
But software and hardware on new smartphones, including the iPhone 6, could replace these, paving the way for a transition to digital identification and payment processing.
"Most college students today purchase their own smartphones and manage their accounts via the web," said Huber.
"Using their phones as their new campus card will invariably be seen as an added convenience and customer benefit by most students."
Features on smartphones which could replace cards include an NFC chip used for payments and security entry, as well as data encryption for privacy and on the iPhone 6 specifically, Apple Pay.
Huber predicts: "I expect to see a wave of campuses shifting from plastic cards to user-provided virtual credentials by the end of the decade."
