Intel Corp and Bethel, Connecticut partner Duracell International Inc have now completed their smart battery specifications – Smart Battery Data and the System Management Bus – intended to give users of portable devices lower battery costs, more reliable battery-level information, and the ability to adapt their machines to the latest battery technologies. A smart battery is a rechargeable battery equipped with specialised hardware that provides present state, calculated and predicted information to the host system under software control, providing accurate state-of-charge information and an accurate prediction of the remaining operating time. The smart battery holds its own information, a given host device will be able to accommodate multiple battery chemistries and charge appropriately.
