IBM and Intel Corp. have announced Alert on LAN, which combines hardware and software to warn network managers when a PC on a Local Area Network has run into difficulties, whether the PC is on or not. Intel will be building Alert on LAN — which will be available on IBM’s new Pentium II based IntelliStation M-Pro workstations – onto its 82558 LAN on motherboard chip set. Running with either Intel’s LANDesk Client Manager or IBM Netfinity Manager, Alert on LAN lets a network manager know if PCs, servers or their memories, are stolen from a system, or if they fail to work. IBM also plans to release an Alert on LAN for Token Ring product later this year.
