Intel Corp has launched a new support and data protection service for PC users it’s calling the AnswerExpress Support Suite. The service will deliver end user and small office subscribers help on PC related questions via the internet from live specialists who promise to respond within minutes. There will also be virus protection software with online updates, an Answer Library of tips, tutorials and articles, and an online data backup service available to subscribers. It will cover over 100 applications, with the system automatically sending configuration details back to the technical specialists to help with the answers. Intel plans to combine its services with those of some of its retailers, such as CompUSA Inc, which will combine its own hardware maintenance services with AnswerExpress. Computer City and Computer Discount Warehouse are also taking the service, and users can also sign up direct from the web. AnswerExpress costs $50 for an initial three months, and $6 or $15 per month thereafter, depending on the level of support. The move to offer for-profit services could upset Intel OEMs who see service as a means of boosting up their profit margins.
