Skyhook said it would use the funding to expand in the US, Europe and Asia.

Bain Capital Ventures led the round, which included Intel Capital and Nokia’s Innovent unit. Skyhook has raised a total of $8.3m since it launched in 2003.

The Boston, Massachusetts-based company claims to have developed the first indoor-outdoor positioning system that uses WiFi, rather than GPS or cell towers, to pinpoint location.

The system does use GPS and IP location technologies in combination with its core WiFi positioning. The key benefits, according to Skyhook, are that the system requires no specialized hardware and works inside buildings.

The company’s US network covers 70 major cities in the country
