Inmarsat unveils global Internet of Everywhere plans

Company boosts use of VARs and OEMs targeting visibility and control of mobile assets worldwide.

By Joao Lima

UK communications satellite operator Inmarsat has strengthened its IoT and M2M strategy to enable operational visibility and control of customers’ fixed and mobile assets anywhere.

The company unveiled its plans earlier this month at the CTIA Super Mobility 2015 in Las Vegas and said it will power its services using its own technology.

The operator added that it will advance its strategic Value Added Resellers (VARs) partnerships in order to combine the core strengths of its network with partner’s solutions, and to provide customers with end-to-end services.

Inmarsat’s network includes over 750,000 IoT endpoints, which has not yet made the company known for its IoT business, explained David Wigglesworth, VP for Internet of Everywhere at Inmarsat.

The company’s L-band M2M network has been built for the monitoring, tracking and controlling of fixed or mobile assets.

The firm added that its services are available worldwide and that it provides 99.9% availability across its L-band satellite network. The solutions can be integrated with existing infrastructure and scaled as demand grows.

Inmarsat has also designed two M2M services to deliver its IoT vision. The IsatData Pro (IDP) was purpose built for M2M and operates in near real-time worldwide, the company said.

It added that IDP is a low data rate messaging service ideal for monitoring and tracking (telemetry) of remote fixed or mobile assets where battery operation is required, such as containers and gas flow metering.

Inmarsat also introduced the BGAN M2M solution, a worldwide two-way IP data service for monitoring and control of fixed and mobile assets in unmanned or remote locations that need higher-bandwidth capabilities.

Wigglesworth said: "We are empowering existing and prospective VAR partners to offer unparalleled worldwide connectivity to their M2M and IoT customers through a single network and a single SIM."
