Information Builders Inc and Apple Computer Inc have formed a strategic relationship in which Information Builders’ Enterprise Data Access/SQL client-server software will provide an Apple Macintosh personal computer with the means to access a broad array of non-relational data. The relationship will also include future software development by Information Builders for the Macintosh and joint sales and marketing between the two companies. Information Builders is to develop System 7.0 Data Access Manager support for its EDA/SQL client, and this will enable Macintosh users transparently to access data in 45 different databases, and file structures in 35 hardware environments. EDA/SQL for Macintosh will enable Mac products to participate in IBM’s Information Warehouse framework of database management systems, interfaces, tools and facilities. It provides an ANSI SQL application programming interface for the Macintosh, while the EDA/SQL HyperCard Extender allows HyperCard developers to integrate EDA/SQL with their applications through a set of XCMDS. EDA/SQL Extender Products provide direct interfaces from popular tools, such as HyperCard, Lotus 1-2-3 and SmallTalk. The Macintosh EDA/SQL product is available in several different configurations and for third generation language access, the API/SQL and EDA/LINK components are required. Both of these components will be available this month, and they cost $175 each. The HyperCard Extender for EDA/SQL ships this month at $100. The EDA/SQL Data Access Manager component will be available in the first quarter of 1992 at $175, and this component requires EDA/LINK. EDA/SQL servers for MVS, VM and VMS arrive this month, with servers for other hosts to follow.
