HCL Infosystems Ltd, India’s largest PC vendor will complain against Compaq’s billing its $1,025 PC as India’s cheapest to the Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology, MAIT, India’s apex body for the computer hardware industry. HCL contends that the advertisements for Compaq’s Deskpro 1000 are misleading and deceptive as it doesn’t include the price of a monitor. Compaq’s offer, which started March 4, has unleashed a price war in India with PC firms going head-to-head to offer consumers cheap deals. Several other PC vendors, such as HP, Siemens Nixdorf and Digital India, a wholly owned unit of DEC, are also expected to join HCL in its complaint. Compaq claims that its worldwide policy is to offer PCs without monitors.
