IMC reaches 10,000 members with Intel jumping onboard

London-based M2M organisation celebrates 10,000 members milestone as it publishes its first Quarterly IoT Buyers’ Index.

By Joao Lima

The International M2M Council (IMC) has revealed it has reached 10,000 associated members as the race for global understanding of the IoT spectrum intensifies.

Members are entirely comprised of individual OEMs, enterprise users, and applications developers that buy IoT solutions, according to the IMC.

Intel and Wipro were two of the latest companies to join the group, and will also seat on the IMC Board of Governors alongside with AT&T, Digi International, Verizon and Deutsche Telekom.

The British organisation has been active for 18 months and aims to boost understanding and sales in IoT by proving the business case for the IoT.

The IMC has also unveiled its first Quarterly IoT Buyers’ Index, designed to track the buying patterns of its members over time to provide trending data for the IoT and M2M sectors.

In the index, the organisation revealed that enterprise users are lagging behind OEMs and developers in both the immediacy and size of their plans for IoT deployments. Applications developers heavily favour cellular and short-range connectivity for IoT rollouts, according to the report.

The index also revealed that while the energy sector turns to systems integrators when considering IoT, manufacturing firms use device makers, and the retail sector goes to software providers.

As for the next six months, the IMC found that the industry sectors most interested in deploying IoT solutions are healthcare, logistics, and manufacturing.

Alex Brisbourne, Chairman of the IMC and CEO of KORE Telematics, said: "[The 10,000 members mark] will provide a statistically significant base for the quantitative research that we provide, which includes not just data about buying patterns, but also crucial demographic information about the members and ad hoc queries into important subjects like security and low-power IoT."

Rose Schooler, VP of the IoT Strategy Office at Intel, said: "The IMC is an industry-leading professional organisation that is reaching out to adopters of IoT technology on a broad scale.

"The organisation is gaining an average of 275 new members per week – members that are developing, buying, and deploying IoT solutions. Clearly, there is a demand in the market to learn more."
