The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is looking to build an overarching architecture to develop interoperability standards for the Internet of Things (IoT) by 2016.
IEEE P2413, which was set up by the IEEE in July, aims to form a framework for interoperability among connected devices and related applications in home automation, industrial systems, telematics and other sectors that are expected to use IoT in the coming years.
While it doesn’t replace existing IoT standard groups, it aims to create a standard architecture so IoT systems for all industries can work together, according to Oleg Logvinov, chair of the IEEE P2413 Working Group.
"They need a place where they can come together and move forward as a scalable, unified platform," he said at the IEEE Standards Association IoT Workshop in California, according to InfoWorld.
"That type of unification can be enabled only by a global, international standard."
He added that the benefits of IoT could also include economies of scale, lower production costs and innovative applications.
The standard group hopes to complete the standard by 2016.
