Bachman, Candle, Goal, Platinum, Information Retrieval share crowded SystemView stage

Bachman Information Systems Inc, Candle Corp, Goal Systems International Inc and Platinum Technology Inc have been designated IBM SystemView Development Partners. IBM has announced that Information Retrieval Companies Inc has joined the list, and that it has established marketing relationships with all five partners. Enhancements to the NetView Version 2 Graphic Monitor Facility extend the scope and productivity of network management to include multivendor networks. New graphical views are claimed to enable an operator at a graphics workstation to monitor, manage, and administer heterogeneous, multivendor networks. An integrated command facility enables operators to issue commands for resources selected from the graphical views. NetView automation facilities provide the base for SystemView automation services in System/390 and System/370 environments. Version 2 Release 2 automation services are enhanced to include support for remote access to the NetView bridge interface for centralised access to databases, and other enhancements include LU 6.2 transport enhancements and local area network command list extensions. Also, automation services include remote command support that enables applications to send system, subsystem, and network commands to distributed hosts and to receive responses from them. The automation services are available under MVS, VM and VSE.

SystemView Host Configuration Statement of Direction

IBM says that one day it intends to provide integration of host configuration with a single, integrated SystemView conforming graphical user interface on a PS/2 for MVS/ESA environments. The elements include the Hardware Configuration Definition component of MVS/ESA Version 4, Escon Manager Version 1 Release 2, together with ScreenView, a feature of MVS/ESA Version 4. Users can enter host configuration definitions once, and the integration extends the scope of Hardware Configuration Definition input validation to the Escon Director definitions. The ScreenView feature handles the sharing of task information for the configuration applications presenting the user with a logical view of tasks, and providing the graphical, text, and command interface services for presentation and navigation. All of the elements for the integrated host configuration will be available under MVS/ESA by December 1992, IBM promises, adding that it intends to extend the integrated host configuration functions to VM/ESA with Hardware Configuration Defini tion, Escon Manager and ScreenView VM/ESA support.

VM Host Management monitoring

Operations management in VM is said to be improved and simplified with the introduction of new SystemView Host Management Facilities/VM. It is designed to provide active, automated monitoring and control of subsystems and applications, scheduling and synchronisation of automated support activities and performance management. In environments where the VM system is managed by an MVS host, Host Management Facilities can automate the local VM system while integrating with NetView for centralised management from the MVS host.

SystemView and VSE/ESA Systems Management

VSE systems provide integrated systems management capabilities that work with NetView. VSE systems can be managed by an MVS host and use the automation facilities of NetView on the VSE system and on the MVS host. Some of the functions integrated into the VSE system include automated subsystem and system restart, CICS extended recovery facility enhanced availability, timer-driven job scheduling, automated message handling using filtering and routing, and optional console support. IBM says that VSE will continue to improve its compatibility and functional co-operation with MVS.

AS/400 Systems Management, AIX and SystemView

Productivity for AS/400 systems management is said to be improved by OS/400 and SAA SystemView System Manager/400 licensed programs with AS/400 Version 2 Release 1. Systems management functions for managing a single AS/400 system are integrat

ed within the OS/400 licensed program, and improved operational features include faster system restart and new operational functions that simplify output and scheduling of automatic system power on-off. AS/400 automated problem analysis and resolution support for software is extended, and a new application programming interface for alerts enables various applications to integrate with OS/400 problem management. IBM says that the OS/400 and SystemView System Manager/400 licensed programs will provide SystemView conforming end-user interfaces, and System Performance Monitor/2, which is to have a SystemView-conforming interface, provides system resource usage for OS/2 by collecting data, providing real-time graphs, logging, and reporting. SPM/2 Distributed Feature enables a system administrator to process performance data remotely collected from OS/2 local area network servers and to provide better service to the OS/2 users. AIX Version 3 for the RS/6000 can be managed from a SystemView managing system such as MVS or VM using network interoperability features. AIX Network Management/6000 provides a Simple Network Management Protocol Manager/Monitor that works with SNMP agents to aid in managing and monitoring TCP/IP networks, and AIX Network Management/6000 can also interoperate with NetView, NetView Distribution Manager, and IBM’s Host Command Facility.

Distributed Storage Management Statement of Direction

IBM says that it intends one day to extend the Data Facility Storage Management Subsystem to the distributed environment. Facilities include an MVS-based server to manage back-up and archive data from local area networks and workstation clients. Also, IBM says that it is planning for for the OS/2-based client storage administrator functions of the MVS-based server to provide a SystemView conforming end-user interface – no dates though.
