DB2/400 query manager and sql development kit
IBM has enhanced the old SQL/400 and given it the snappy new name of the DB2/400 Query Manager and SQL Development Kit. The product provides an interactive query and report writing interface, as well as precompilers and tools to assist in writing SQL application programs in high-level programming languages. The SQL Development Kit provides for relational database access using programming languages such as C, RPG, Cobol, PL/I and Fortran. The interactive query interfaces, Query Manager and Interactive SQL, are provided for users to generate queries and reports, and for programmers to test complex SQL statements. New features include new precompilers for Integrated Language Environment Cobol/400 and ILE RPG/400, conformance to open standards for SQL, declarative referential integrity and stored procedures syntax support, and support for long names for SQL objects. The DB2/400 Query Manager and SQL Development Kit provides precompilers and tools to assist in developing SQL applications and queries. Once created, the applications and queries can be restored and run on other systems, which do not have this product installed. A member of the DB2/400 family of products, DB2/400 Query Manager and SQL Development Kit is compatible with previous releases of the AS/400 Database Management System. The DB2/400 database manager function is integrated into OS/400 software and AS/400 hardware, and includes all the support necessary for applications and queries that use SQL to run on the AS/400. Initial customer shipments are in August; general availability November.
Datapropagator makes db2, db2/2 seem a little less alien
The IBM DataPropagator Relational Capture and Apply/400 Version 3 Release 1 automatically copies data within and between DB2/400, DB2 and DB2/2 databases. DataPropagator Relational/400 enables you to subset copied data, maintain historical change information, and control copy impact on system resources. Copying can involve transferring the entire contents of a user table, or transferring only the changes that have occurred since the last copy. DataPropagator Relational/400 can also complement client-server environments, says IBM. Clients that update the master database can have their updates automatically propagated to other client databases. DataPropagator Relational/2 provides a graphical user interface for defining copy operations. DataPropagator Relational/2 works with all of the DataPropagator Relational supported databases, including DB2/400. Users can automatically maintain synchronisation with the original data by specifying copy intervals in minutes, hours, days, or weeks. If DataPropagator Relational/400 is used with other DataPropagator Relational products, DataPropagator Relational/2 should be used to define all copy operations, says IBM. If DataPropagator Relational/400 is used only with DB2/400 databases, use of DataPropagator Relational/2 is optional. Initial customer shipments are in August, with general availability in November this year.
Get those back-ups automated with backup recovery and media services
Backup Recovery and Media Services/400 – BRMS/400 Version 3 Release 1 – is an AS/400 offering for policy-driven back-up, recovery, tape media management, and archive services for tape devices. It runson a single AS/400 system, or in a network of AS/400 systems supporting a shared tape media inventory. With this release, BRMS/400 is upgraded to a licensed program, and a number of enhancements have been added. These include the automatic recall of archived database files from tape devices to direct access storage devices, disk when required, and fast search on IBM 3480, 3490, and 3490E tape drives, including 3490E tape drives in the 3494 Tape Library Dataserver. BRMS/400 pricing is a combination of a base charge plus a charge for the number of tape media enrolled – work that one out…
Adstar steps up with new as/400 storage manager
AdStar Distributed Storage Manager/400, ADSM/400 Version 1 Release 2 is IBM’s latest addition to the AdStar Distribu
ted Storage Manager family. ADSM/400 offers advanced storage management, data access, and back-up offerings on OS/400 for Version 3 Release 1, similar to those currently available for MVS, VM, OS/2, and AIX/6000-based systems. AdStar Distributed Storage Manager/400 is a client-server storage management product providing back-up and archive functions for workstations and local network file servers. It is administrator-controlled, highly automated, centrally-scheduled and network-based, IBM says. ADSM/400 backs up data from clients running on OS/2, NetWare, Windows, MS-DOS, Macintosh and Unix environments to a back-up server running on OS/400 Version 3 Release 1. Initial shipments will be in August, general availability in November.
Object-oriented c set ++ for os/400 previewed
IBM has previewed C Set ++ for OS/400 (try searching for that in a text database), a C++ compiler and application development environment for the AS/400 which also includes IBM C Set ++ for OS/2. IBM C Set ++ for OS/400 is designed to enable applications to take advantage of the benefits of object-oriented technology through the integrated, complete development environment for object-oriented application design, maintenance and support. IBM C Set ++ for OS/400 consists of an OS/400 co-operative compiler targeting the OS/400 server from an OS/2 development workstation; C++ client classes for accessing AS/400 data and services; collection classes and AT&T-standard classes for OS/400; and IBM C Set ++ for OS/2. This includes an optimising OS/2 compiler, targeting OS/2 2.0 or 2.1, a suite of class libraries – including IBM user interface class libraries, collection classes, and AT&T Corp-standard classes. Also included are a visual development environment, graphical debugger, graphical object browser, the Execution Trace Analyzer and Graphical Performance Analyzer, Workframe/2 and OS/2 Developer’s Toolkit 2.1. In the OS/2 development environment, programmers can create C++ programs that execute on OS/400 host systems or on OS/2 workstations in a client-server application. C++ applications running on the AS/400 can access programs written in traditional AS/400 languages. C++ applications on OS/2 can access data and services on OS/400 through C++ access class libraries. IBM C Set ++ for OS/400 will be available to some customers under IBM’s Technology Preview process in fourth quarter 1994, and general availability will be announced after this customer evaluation.
