HTC has been selected by Google to make the next Nexus tablet, people familiar with the matter have told the Wall Street Journal.

The fate of Google’s next 9-inch slate has been unverified for months now, and whilst both paries have declines to comment on the matter, the news confirms Google’s push for working with a broad range of hardware manufacturers.

The sources also claimed that HTC engineers have been visiting Mountain View’s Googleplex recently to work on the project.

Earlier in September, chipmakers NVIDIA also revealed that HTC will be behind the next Nexus tablet. The firm had to release details in a court document. NVIDIA is currently in the midst of a lawsuit with Samsung and Qualcomm and used the Nexus 9 as an example of a device that uses its K1 processor chip.

But NVIDIA went even further than that and said that the Nexus 9 is expected in the third quarter of 2014, which could allude to HTC’s October 8th special launch event.

The Nexus 9 will be the first device to ship with Android’s latest operating system, Android L.
