San Francisco, California-based Horizons Technology Inc and San Jose, California-based Alliance Semiconductor have agreed to joint optimisation and promotion of motion video technologies for personal computers. At the Intermedia trade show the companies will demonstrate full-screen, full-motion, 30 frames per second video playback using the Alliance ProMotion graphics accelerator chip and the TrueMotion S software codec. ProMotion-3210 is a low-cost Windows accelerator with built-in hardware engine for popular motion video playback standards. TrueMotion S is a software-only video available across a range of systems. TrueMotion S is a refinement of the original TrueMotion algorithm which required a dedicated video processor board to play video. With TrueMotion S, computers decode the video directly on the CPU. ProMotion-3210 accelerates Windows displays up to 1,600 by 1,200 resolution at eight bits per pixel, and up to 800 by 600 resolution at 24 bits per pixel true colour. It offers Peripheral Component Interconnect Local Bus or VESA VLBus host interface, and supports 1Mb to 4Mb DRAM.
