Handspring Inc has given further details of the partners that it is linking with to develop ‘Springboard’ expansion modules for its Visor range of handhelds. The Springboard modules are additional hardware bolt-ons for the Palm OS-based machines that will add additional wireless, paging, audio playback and recording and gaming functions.

Among the modules being developed for the Visor range are one-way and two-way pagers, a modem, portable keyboards, global positioning units, a voice recorder, an MP3 player and a computerized guidebook. Handspring say that a wireless telephony unit is also being developed for Visor but won’t announce which company is developing the module yet.

One of the most interesting modules under development for the handhelds is a Bluetooth wireless communications module from Widecomm Inc. There is no word yet on when this will arrive. However, Widecomm is also working on Bluetooth units for Palm Computing and Windows CE-based devices.
