Google has revealed that the next Android OS will be named Marshmallow.
The OS, which has been dubbed Android M, was released to developers in May as M Developer Preview at Google’s I/O developer conference in San Francisco, US.
The new OS features improvements such as direct sharing between Android devices and fingerprint recognition.
The system-level support for fingerprint sensors enables better error reporting, better fingerprint enrolment experience, plus enumeration support for greater reliability, according to Android developers.
The company said in its Android Developers Blog that it is introducing the official Android 6.0 SDK and opening Google Play for publishing apps that target the new API level 23 in Android Marshmallow.
Jamal Eason, Product Manager at Android, said in the blog: "Along with the new platform features like fingerprint support and Doze power saving mode, Android Marshmallow features a new permissions model that streamlines the app install and update process."
This is not the first time the firm adopts a name inspired by sweets having previously put out to the market OSs under the name of Cupcake, Froyo, Ice Cream Sandwich, and most recently Lollipop.

Eason added: "Whether you like them straight out of the bag, roasted to a golden brown exterior with a molten centre, or in fluff form, who does nott like marshmallows? We definitely like them!"
The name of the new software came a week after the company’s shake-up when Google was reduced to a subsidiary of a new company Alphabet.
