Gandalf Technologies Inc, Ottawa, Ontario has announced Xpressway for connecting remote local network users. The company says the product is a central-site system providing connections for Gandalf Premier products including its 5220 remote bridge, and its forthcoming 5240 combined remote bridge and terminal adaptor. Supported services include ISDN, X25, Frame Relay and dial-up public switched telephone network connections, and it also provides SNMP-based integrated network management. Options include boards for Ethernet and Token Ring wiring and concentration, Frame Relay switching, Ethernet and Token Ring bridging and routing, FDDI-to-Ethernet translation bridging, X25 to TCP/IP or Digital Equipment Corp LAT Local Area Transport gateway support, and asynchronous terminal server support. It uses RISC-based hardware – but the term RISC covers everything from the sizzling Alpha to the skeletal Hobbit, and Gandalf says it supports up to 128 B channels per chassis, and incorporates Gandalf’s 8:1 data compression algorithm for 1Mbps of throughput over an ISDN basic rate line. No details on pricing and availability.
