Freescale Semiconductor has unveiled Xtrinsic eCompass software, a new sensor fusion system that can offer accurate context awareness for mobile, 3D gaming and eHealth applications.

The new software comes with a Freescale Xtrinsic accelerometer and magnetometer and mobile applications including augmented reality, 3D gaming, eHealth and location-based services that can deliver accurate orientation data.

Freescale’s Sensor & Actuator Solutions division vice president and general manager Seyed Paransun said as multiple sensors are added to smartphones and other mobile devices, more sophisticated software is required to realise the system performance benefits of a multi-axis sensor system.

Xtrinsic eCompass calibration and compensation software is said to correct magnetic distortions prevalent in existing complex devices.

It also supports application note documentation, development tools and an embedded simulation framework and enables full tilt-compensated and calibrated electronic compass data.

The software is available in source code for use with Freescale’s Xtrinsic smart sensing offerings and will be compatible with existing mobile operating systems and hardware.
