Freescale Semiconductor has introduced QorIQ P2041 quad-core processor for small-medium businesses (SMB) with enterprise class features for security networking equipment.

The P2041 is designed for unified threat management (UTM) security appliances and delivers up to 10 Gbps performance in smaller, less expensive form factors such as the 1U chassis.

<p>Packed with high-end multicore processing engines, the P2041 features such as hardware virtualisation, cryptography and deep packet inspection technology in a single-chip solution for cost effectiveness.

Freescale Networking Processor Division director of marketing Danny Mulligan said the processor offers UTM equipment manufacturers a quad-core, low-power solution with a mix of enterprise-like features and capabilities at SMB price points and form factors.

The new quad core processor is software-compatible with members of Freescale’s range of QorIQ platforms from P1 to P5 levels and pin-compatible with Freescale’s P2040 device.

The P2041 can also be used for applications such as LTE base station network interface cards, single-chip enterprise router solutions, multifunction printers, data centers, application delivery controllers, storage equipment, factory automation technology and iSCSI and switch management controllers.

The company said the quad core processor is planned for sampling in mid-2011, and expected to include software and enablement tools such as a Linux BSP, a software development toolkit and a reference design board.
