EMC Corp has decided software is big business and has begun assailing us with the kind of application detail it hasn’t traditionally communicated to a broad-based audience. But with the likes of Legato, Veritas and others making storage and backup software, it’s decided it can do that too. This week the company revs key value-add applications that work in conjunction with its Symmetrix disk storage management system. Symmetrix Remote Data Facility data duplicator now works over longer distances, performs 25% better, provides additional workload management, enables data recovery procedures to be tested without impacting production applications and commands that are operated remotely. EMC claims 3,500 SRDF installations. Prices start at $60,000. TimeFinder 3.2.1 – EMC has some 2,500 licensees now only transfers data to a remote mirror which has changed since a previous copy and new management functionality. Prices start at $72,000. The EMC Data Manager 4.3 hardware/software package offers new support for Oracle, Informix and Sybase plus SAP R/3 on Oracle and additional disk-to-tape backup. Prices start at $150,000.
