Egghead.com Inc has relaunched its web site, combining all of its businesses in one place. Since it shuttered all of its remaining retail stores earlier this year, the company had been operating three web sites: Egghead.com, which offered new and front line hardware, software and peripherals as well as some specially- priced previous version products; Surplusdirect.com, which marketed surplus items, older version and discontinued products and refurbished hardware products at discount prices; and Surplusauction.com, which sold large lots of discounted products. The redesigned site will offer separate venues, including virtual hardware and software stores, surplus liquidations and multiple auctions. It will also give the company a place from which it can branch out into altogether new product categories, something it has tested in the past with some success. Auctions will now be held for merchandise such as sporting goods, consumer electronics, small appliances and jewelry. The Vancouver, Washington-based company, which claims to be the only national computer products retailer to have moved its entire business to the internet, reckons the new site will allow it to cut expenses considerably and improve gross margins as it increases merchandise and advertising revenues. It claims the site will be able to handle 20 million page views per day and process up to 10,000 orders.
