Network Computing Devices Inc, The Mountain View, California- based provider of thin client hardware and software, has reported a first-quarter net loss of $2.0m on revenue down 13.8% at $26.4m, up from a loss of $489,000 in the year-ago quarter. The loss amounted to $0.12 per share, $0.02 worse than analysts surveyed by First Call were expecting. The company said the quarter’s performance reflected the expected substantial decline in OEM shipments to IBM and lower sales of third-party software. Those factors were partially offset, however, by added revenue from the initial quarter of selling products from the newly- acquired network displays unit of Tektronix and by revenue and unit growth from the company’s new Windows-based terminals. Sales of non-OEM hardware grew from 8,600 units in the year-ago quarter to more than 24,000 units. Operating margins rose from 35.4% to 42.5% in the quarter.
