Dell Computer Corp yesterday introduced its Dell PowerEdge line of 15 servers in two families, and also added high-performance peripherals and a suite of network-specific services. The PowerEdge SP, PowerEdge XE i486 and Pentium-based server models offer Peripheral Component Interconnect local bus technology, thermal monitoring of the systems’ compartments so that the Pentium models don’t burn up, and error checking and correcting memory. The SP, starting at $4,600, and the XE, starting at $6,850, will be available later this month. Dell’s new LANsolve portfolio of products and services is intended to support customers beyond the purchase cycle – Dell says that the LANsolve approach expands the usual role of the hardware vendor by shifting responsibility for network set-up and configuration back to the manufacturer; no prices for it.
