Datapoint Corp has finally persuaded UK-based Kalamazoo Computer Group Plc to buy its European automotive dealer management systems division rather than take 50% in a joint venture with Datapoint. Kalamazoo has been the only game in town after talks to sell the business to Automatic Processing Inc for $32m fell through (CI No 2,848). Waiting has paid off, because Kalamazoo, which was to have paid the San Antonio, Texas company $15.5m for 50%, is now paying $33m for the lot. The European unit’s software is designed to help car dealers to control their inventories and billings. As part of the arrangements, Datapoint will continue to provide hardware and service to the network. The deal is subject to approval from Kalamazoo shareholders. Datapoint will also sell three buildings in San Antonio to an investor group for $4m. Proceeds are expected to reduce debts and meet existing contracts, it said.
