Bay Networks Inc is planning to introduce Point-to-Point Protocol payload data compression across its entire line of Wellfleet routers. The implementation is based on an algorithm that uses technology developed by the Norwood, Massachusetts-based Magnalink Communications division of Telco Systems Inc. Bay says that most users will experience a 2:1 compression ratio. The Point-to-Point protocol implementation is available with router software version 8.10, and users with an existing software subscription service will not be charged for the enhancement. Bay Networks has also announced a deal with Unisys Corp under which the latter will provide Bay users with on-site hardware support through its international service and support infrastructure. All service calls will be managed through Bay Networks’s Valbonne, France-based European technical support centre, thereby providing users with a single point of contact for resolving any network problem, says the company. Upon receiving a service call, Bay’s engineers will evaluate the problem and dispatch a Unisys customer service engineer if required. Unisys will also hold and manage spares inventory for all Bay products at its European sites.
