Yahoo has revealed its plans to continue in search technology business and has redesigned its search, mail and instant messenger with a series of upgrades such as photo editing inside e-mail, additional capacity for e-mail attachments, and better connection to outside applications.
Earlier in July, Yahoo signed a 10-year deal with Microsoft under which search on Yahoo’s websites will be powered with the new Microsoft Bing search-engine technology. On the partnership, Prabhakar Raghavan, a senior vice president of Yahoo, said that the companies have integrated on back-end search but still intend to be competitors on the front end.
The company has plans to add people search feature to its search, which will allow users to find a person on Yahoo and also get their Facebook connections, Twitter and LinkedIn profiles. The company said it intends to develop a new search-page design in order to deliver more relevant search results to users’ queries.
The new mail features will provide ‘statuscasting’, which shows the status of the the user when he logs into his mail. It also allows customers to move easily between services such as video conferencing, messaging and photo sharing.
According to the company, its new messenger features video calling capabilities to allow users connect though face-to-face chats. The new email feature upgrades are reportedly available for US users and will be available throughout the world in coming weeks. Its new search is under test and is expected to be offered later this year.
Yahoo said that the users can upgrade to new features for free. The company is also planning a new brand campaign in October.
