Vietnam Telecoms National (VTN), a state-owned subsidiary of Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Group (VNPT), is deploying 40G optical networking offering of Ciena, a provider of network systems, to provide an array of service offerings and grow its subscriber base across all market segments.

Ciena said that the 40G offering is an electronic dispersion compensation technology, which allows VTN to upgrade its existing 10G links across country sites to 40G with the addition of transponder cards and no re-engineering of existing fiber routes or additional equipment required.

In addition, the new offering also provides investment protection as it can scale to 100G in the same manner as capacity demands increase.

The company said the VTN network is upgraded with its ActivSpan Common Photonic Layer and ActivFlex 6500 Packet-Optical Platform with integrated 40G/100G optics.

The 40G and 100G offerings are based on coherent detection, Dual Polarization Quadrature Phase Shift Keying modulation, and advanced electronic digital signal processing techniques.

VTN managing director Luong Manh Hoang said as they look to implement a significant network upgrade, they needed a painless migration strategy from their existing 10G infrastructure to accommodate much higher demands on their network.

"Ciena’s offering met our immediate needs to achieve 40G capacity while offering a forward-looking evolution path to 100G with proven technology and field experience, allowing us to address the growing capacity requirements of our network today and preparing us to meet future needs," Hoang said.
