Virtualisation and cloud software company VMware has signed an agreement to acquire the California-based Virsto for undisclosed sum to strengthen its offering in storage technologies.

Virsto offers software which helps customers to enhance storage performance and utilisation in virtual environments.

VMware storage and availability vice president, John Gilmartin said: "We believe that the acquisition of Virsto will accelerate our development of storage technologies, allowing our customers to greatly improve the efficiency and performance of storage in virtual infrastructure."

Virsto offers virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI) applications which can cut down the cost of storage per desktop by as much as

70%.

Virsto CEO Mark Davis said that the combined application will provide customers with cost-efficient and agile storage architecture.

"VMware and Virsto share a highly aligned vision to remove complexity and increase efficiencies through virtualization,"Davis said.

The acquisition of Virsto will expand VMware’s storage portfolio, which includes VMware, vSphere and the VMware vSphere Storage Appliance.

The acquisition is scheduled to complete in the first quarter of 2013 and is a part of the company’s plan to deliver the software-defined datacentre application.
